New West Virginia State Police Cadet Class to Begin
INSTITUTE - The first Cadet Class in three years is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 13, 2003, at the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute.
In April 2002, in order to help alleviate the West Virginia State Police's critical need for additional manpower, Governor Bob Wise and the West Virginia Legislature approved funding to fill vacancies in the Department. Testing for two Cadet Classes began in June 2002 and the second Cadet Class is slated to begin on January 27, 2003.
"This Monday, the State Police will enlist the first of two 35 member Cadet Classes scheduled for January," said Colonel Howard E. Hill, Jr., Superintendent of the West Virginia State Police. "These new Cadet-Trooper classes will play an integral part in the attempt to build the State Police back up to full strength. We are currently testing for an additional Cadet Class to begin in September 2003, pending budget approval."
The Cadets will spend twenty-six weeks at the Academy and received approximately 1417 hours of training in and out of the classroom. Topics such as criminal & traffic law, self-defense, drug identification and DUI training will be a part of the curriculum. Graduation is tentatively scheduled for July 11, 2003.
A swearing in ceremony for the 51st Cadet Class will be held at 9:00am at the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute. All media outlets are encouraged to attend. If you plan on attending, please be at the Academy by 8:45 am.
