52nd Cadet Class Sworn In

INSTITUTE – On Monday, January 27, 2003, Governor Bob Wise swore in the West Virginia State Police 52nd Cadet Class at the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute.

In April 2002, in order to help alleviate the West Virginia State Police’s critical need for additional manpower, Governor Wise and the West Virginia Legislature approved funding to fill vacancies in the Department. Testing for two new Cadet Classes began in June 2002. The first Cadet Class was sworn in by Governor Wise on January 13, 2003.

“This Monday, the State Police will enlist the second of two Cadet Classes scheduled for January,” said Colonel Howard E. Hill, Jr., Superintendent of the West Virginia State Police. “These new Cadet-Trooper classes will play an integral part in the attempt to build the State Police back up to full strength. Currently, we are testing for an additional Cadet Class to begin in September 2003, pending budget approval.”

The Cadets will spend twenty-six weeks at the Academy and received numerous hours of training in and out of the classroom. Topics such as criminal & traffic law, self-defense, drug identification and DUI training will be a part of the curriculum.

A swearing in ceremony for the 52nd Cadet Class was held at the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute.
