WAYNE – On January 25, 2009, at approximately 6:42pm, Troopers from the Wayne County Detachment responded to a single vehicle crash about one mile up Big Lynn Creek Road in Wayne County. Additional reports indicated that the involved vehicle had flipped over a bridge and landed on its roof in Big Lynn Creek.

Trooper A. M. Whittington, along with the East Lynn EMS, arrived on scene and began efforts to rescue both the driver and passenger. Trooper Whittington spent approximately 15 minutes in icy thigh-high deep water assisting with the rescue.

The driver, Roy M. Flemming, 51, of Ethel, WV was later pronounced dead at Cabell Huntington Hospital. The passenger, Leonard Bartram, age and address unknown, was treated and released. Trooper Whittington was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and placed off duty until Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
