State Police Recognized for Traffic Safety Efforts

SOUTH CHARLESTON - Two Detachments of the West Virginia State Police were recognized today for their efforts involving highway safety.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office held its annual Click It or Ticket Awards Ceremony today in Beckley and awarded the Charles Town and Princeton Detachments for their continued efforts in keeping the highways of West Virginia safe. The awards were based on the education and enforcement methods used by law enforcement officers around the state to reduce DUIs, reckless driving, seat belt usage and other highway safety violations.

In 2000, West Virginia ranked among the lowest states in seat belt usage with a 49% rating. Since the Click It or Ticket campaign began, West Virginia has raised its seat belt usage rate to 85% in 2005, 3% higher than the national average of 82%.

Sergeant Glen Doyle of the Harrisville Detachment was also presented with the Lifesavers Award. This award is presented to officers who continually perform above and beyond their normal duties and focus specifically on highway safety.

The West Virginia State Police recognizes the need to protect motorists traveling on the highways of West Virginia. The presentation of these awards is an acknowledgement that the State Police is committed to keeping highways safe.
