Troopers Prepare for Labor Day 2008
STATEWIDE - Troopers are preparing for a busy Labor Day weekend by increasing visibility on the State’s highways to keep drivers safe. As part of an ongoing commitment to Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), the West Virginia State Police will increase visibility and focus on enforcement of all traffic violations on the roadways during the holiday weekend. As part of a nationally coordinated mobilization effort, a “target period” of enforcement has been designated as Friday, August 29 – Monday, September 1, 2008.

Operation C.A.R.E. is a multi-agency, national effort to reduce the number of traffic crashes on the nation’s roads through strict traffic enforcement.

The West Virginia State Police is also participating in the national Over the Limit, Under Arrest campaign, designed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, aimed at saving lives and preventing injuries in alcohol related crashes and arresting DUI drivers. Law enforcement officers will be establishing sobriety checkpoints and conducting saturation and directed patrols on all West Virginia roadways through the Labor Day Holiday.

In order to allow law enforcement agencies across the state to designate more officers on the highways, the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Office and the Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention have provided funding for checkpoint operations and overtime for officers. These two agencies continue to play a vital role in helping to decrease the amount of alcohol related crashes in West Virginia.

Last year during the Labor Day holiday, there were five people killed in five separate crashes in West Virginia.
