Troopers Prepare for Labor Day 2003
SOUTH CHARLESTON - Troopers are preparing for a busy Labor Day weekend by stepping up patrols on the State’s highways to keep drivers safe. As part of an ongoing commitment to Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), the West Virginia State Police will increase patrols and focus on enforcement of all traffic violations on the roadways during the holiday weekend. As part of a nationally coordinated mobilization effort, a “target period” of enforcement has been designated as August 29 - September 1, 2003.
“I have ordered Troopers statewide to focus their attention on aggressive driving, speeding, driving under the influence and occupant protection,” said Colonel Howard E. Hill, Jr., Superintendent of the West Virginia State Police. “The State Police continues to make a conscious effort to crackdown on those drivers who tend to create an unsafe environment on the highways of West Virginia.”
Last year during the Labor Day holiday, there were five deaths as a result of five different fatal crashes in West Virginia. Of those five crashes, four involved the use of alcohol.
Operation C.A.R.E. is a multi-agency, national effort to reduce the number of traffic crashes on the nation’s roads through strict traffic enforcement.
