SOUTH CHARLESTON – On Friday, May 17, 2002 Trooper First Class J. E. Elmore and Senior Trooper C. K. Zerkle, both of the South Charleston Detachment, received information regarding a stolen ATV in the Dutchridge area of Clendenin, WV, Kanawha County.

Upon arrival at the residence, the ATV was located near the rear of the residence. Trooper Zerkle knocked on the front door and began to speak with a subject about the ATV. Trooper Zerkle then noticed a strong chemical odor typically associated with the process of manufacturing methamphedamine emanating from inside the residence. During the investigation, it was learned an explosive device was located inside the residence. A search warrant for the residence was obtained and members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) along with a member of the Department’s Explosive Response Team were notified.

During a search of the residence, Sergeant D. A. Hutchison, bomb technician, discovered an explosive device located in a front closest. According to Sergeant Hutchison, the device had enough explosive power to seriously injure or cause death to anyone opening the closet door. Sergeant Hutchison was able to successfully render the device safe.

Joe Vance, 42, and Robert Cole, 35, both of who reside at the residence in Clendenin, were arrested and charged with possession of explosive devices, transferring and receiving stolen property, manufacturing methamphedamine and wanton endangerment. Timothy Jett, 42, of Elkview was arrested and charged with transferring and receiving stolen property. He was transported to magistrate court where he posted bond. Charles Melton, 37, of Elkview was arrested for transferring and receiving stolen property and grand larceny. Vance, Cole and Melton were all transported to the South Central Regional Jail.
