State Police Make Arrest In Berkeley County Hit and Run Investigation

BERKELEY COUNTY – Aaron Curtis Lewis, age 18, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, was arrested on Monday, June 3, 2002 at approximately 12:30 p.m. at Berkeley County Magistrate Court. Lewis turned himself in to members of the West Virginia State Police Martinsburg Detachment.

Lewis was charged with fleeing from an officer resulting in injury after a vehicle crash on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 left Sergeant Scott E. Paugh of the Charles Town Detachment seriously injured. The crash occurred on Golf Course Road near Martinsburg in Berkeley County. The 1995 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Lewis crossed the centerline and struck Sergeant Paugh’s West Virginia State Police cruiser. After the crash, Lewis fled the scene on foot.

Sergeant Paugh is listed in stable condition in a Fairfax, Virginia hospital. He is suffering from extensive injuries to his head, left arm, and left leg.

Lewis is currently incarcerated in the Eastern Regional Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. Further charges may still be pending.
