National Police Week 2005
SOUTH CHARLESTON – The West Virginia State Police will recognize National Police Week, May 15 – 21, 2005, by flying blue ribbons on the antennas of all State Police cruisers. The blue ribbon campaign is designed to show support and appreciation for all law enforcement officers nationwide.
The campaign is spearheaded by C.O.P.S., Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc., a nationwide non-profit organization that provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and helps agencies prepare for the trauma of an officer’s death.
According to C.O.P.S., over 1.5 million blue ribbons will be distributed nationwide this year. Officers are especially encouraged to fly the ribbons on May 15, which has been designated as National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day.
Public Law 87-726, signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, was amended by the 103rd Congress as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-322, which directs that the flag of the United States on all Government buildings be displayed at half-staff on May 15, National Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
