Area Children Get to “Shop With a Cop”
SOUTH CHARLESTON – For the eighth time in as many years, the West Virginia State Police, the Charleston Police Department and the West Virginia Air National Guard Military Police will participate in the “Shop with a Cop” program.
Catenary Coal will again generously provide funding for the annual “Shop with a Cop” program. The company will provide funding for 22 underprivileged children representing 15 families from the Cabin Creek area a shopping spree worth approximately $200. In addition, the coal company, in cooperation with Foodland, will provide a $40 Christmas dinner for each family.
On Friday, December 19, 2003, at 7:00am, each of the children, students from Sharon-Dawes Elementary School, will be paired with a police officer that will assist the child in keeping track of their items during the Christmas shopping spree. The officers will use calculators to keep the totals during the shopping spree so each child utilizes his/her spending allotment.
“The West Virginia State Police is extremely proud to be a part of this program,” said Colonel Howard E. Hill, Jr., Superintendent of the West Virginia State Police. “The joy that comes from seeing a child’s face light up during an opportunity like this is what makes Christmas ‘The most wonderful time of the year’”.
