Sex Offender Addresses Now Available On-Line

STATEWIDE – A new change has been made to the Sex Offender Registry. As of August 1, 2005, specific addresses of convicted lifetime sex offenders can now be accessed by the public on-line. The additional information is being released as the result of a rule change submitted by the State Police earlier this summer.

The Sex Offender Registry was established in 1993 and made available to the public on-line in 1998. All convicted sex offenders are required to register with the State Police and lifetime offenders are placed on the website. Lifetime offenders are those offenders who have either; 1) been deemed a violent sexual predator, 2) been convicted of multiple offenses or 3) been convicted of a qualifying offense with a minor. Currently there are 2023 offenders registered with the State Police.

To access the Sex Offender website, first log on to the West Virginia State Police website at www.wvstatepolice.com. From there, click on the “sex offender” tab on the right. The site is designed to allow the user to search by name, street, city, county or any combination of the four.

The site also provides a check box to search specifically for wanted offenders. Wanted offenders are those who have failed to comply with the West Virginia Sex Offender Law.
