

South Charleston, West Virginia – On February 20, 2009, at approximately 8:12pm,
Sgt. B. E. Guthrie, Senior Trooper M. L. Vance, Trooper C. W. Seacrist, Trooper
J. E. Williams, and Trooper J. K. Harris of the Logan County Detachment responded
to a stabbing complaint at Route 1 Box 581, Harts, West Virginia. At the scene,
Troopers discovered the victim, Ms. Delenda Ortiz (38 years of age, from Harts,
West Virginia) unresponsive and bleeding from a wound. Mr. Dwayne Mullins (48
years of age, from Harts, West Virginia) advised the Troopers that the victim’s
sister, Ms. Rebecca Adams (41 years of age, from Harts, West Virginia ) stabbed
her and left the scene. Mr. Mullins was subsequently arrested for obstructing the
Troopers in the performance of their duties, fleeing, and additional charges of
domestic assault, and domestic battery. Ms. Ortiz was transported by Health Net
to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
Sgt. B. E. Guthrie, Senior Trooper M. L. Vance, and Trooper J. K. Harris were
able to locate Ms. Adams at the residence of another individual. As the Troopers
attempted to arrest Ms. Adams, she pulled a knife and cut the forearm sleeve of
Senior Trooper Vance’s uniform. Senior Trooper Vance did not suffer a serious
injury as a result of the knife attack. Ms. Adams was charged with two counts of
malicious wounding and one count of unlawful assault on a police officer.
