Wyoming County Shooting

BECKLEY – A Brenton man was fatally wounded yesterday after shooting at a Trooper and two Wyoming County Deputies.

Roger Steele, 56, of Brenton, died last night after being shot by a State Police corporal. Steele had fired shots at the officers with a shotgun.

At around 11:00pm, the officers had traveled to Steele’s residence to question him in regards to several attempted arsons in the Shannon Mill Creek area. Steele had been developed as a suspect in attempting to set fire to several dwellings earlier in the day. As the officers approached the residence, they observed Steele sitting on his front porch armed with a shotgun. Steele was ordered to put down his weapon and instead chose to fire at the officers. The officers took cover behind their cruisers. A State Police corporal from the Jesse Detachment returned fire striking Steele twice in the upper torso area.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.
