About Our Facility

The premier enforcement training center for West Virginia is the West Virginia State Police Academy. The academy is situated in Kanawha county and encompasses approximately 26 acres of property. The main academy complex houses  four classrooms, a fully staffed cafeteria, barracks style lodging for approximately 200 students, weight room facilities, the State Police Medical and Legal Units, The State Police EEO Counselor, the Director and Assistant Director of Training and the Academy Uniform and Civilian Training Staff. Our facility is also home to the State Police K-9 Training Unit, State Police   Aviation Section, Troop 4 Headquarters, and an automated firing range.

Mission Statement The mission of the West Virginia State Police Training Section has been and remains to be, an effort to provide the police officers of West Virginia with the most current methods of training in the area of law enforcement to promote efficiency and effectiveness to better serve the citizens of West Virginia. Our mission is also to upgrade the professional skills of West Virginia law enforcement personnel at all levels of government. This has been a continuing goal of the West Virginia State Police Academy Staff since 1950, when twenty-five municipal officers from 14 cities were provided Basic Police Skills Training.

Fifty years later in the year 2000, there are many new methods of instruction. There is also a cadre of new and improved technological advances in the field of police training. However, our mission remains the same, to upgrade the professional skills of West Virginia law enforcement personnel at all levels of government.

Important Notice To Enrollees It is requested that registrants who cancel their registrations for a course must do so at least five working days in advance of the start of the course. Registrants who do not attend will be billed one half of the total course fee if they do not cancel their registration within the stated time frame. Last minute emergencies will be exempted from this fee based on appropriate documentation and signature(s) of agency administrative officials. Agencies and/or individuals with outstanding debts will not be permitted to register for courses. The intent and purpose of this policy is to encourage enrollees to attend courses for which they have registered. Failure to give adequate notice of cancellation prevents others from attending the course and creates "standby" lists that become longer than necessary. Your cooperation in reducing the number of "no shows" is appreciated. Please register no later than three weeks prior to the first day of class.

Some courses may be canceled due to inadequate attendance.
